Elphinstone station building was erected for the Victorian Railways Department in 1863. It is one of only three similar buildings in the state. The original building consisted of the booking and telegraph office, passengers' waiting facilities and a small residence for the station master. The Kyneton Station was erected in 1862 and added to in 1863 and again during the 1880s. The buildings on each platform are built in bluestone as is the lamp room with water tank above and the large goods shed immediately behind the northbound platform buildings.
